CASEL

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning:

  • Founded in 1994; pioneered “social-emotional learning”
  • Board of Directors includes Timothy P. Shriver ( CASEL co-founder and board chairman; son of Eunice Kennedy Shriver; sister of Maria Shriver); Andrea Wishom (Chief Operating Officer, Skywalker Properties; oversees charitable distributions for the George Lucas Family Foundation — see separate entry for George Lucas Educational  Foundation/Edutopia)
  • CASEL is “the single most important entity within the SEL sector.” (Congressional testimony of Max Eden, American Enterprise Institute Research Fellow; 4/6/22. https://docs.house.gov/meetings/AP/AP07/20220406/114597/HHRG-117-AP07-Wstate-EdenM-20220406.pdf
  • CASEL’s 2019 “strategic plan” revised its definition of SEL to “center equity and excellence.” According to CASEL executives, the process of “transforming inequitable settings and systems,” which CASEL calls “Transformative SEL,” “is aimed at redistributing power to promote social justice through increased engagement in school and civic life.” https://www.aft.org/ae/summer2021/jagers_skoog-hoffman_barthelus_schlund
  • CASEL advises policy makers in schools and at all levels of government on SEL implementation
